Foraging Habitat Selection of Nipponia nippon in Farmlands in Winter

Abstract:Crested ibis (Nipponia nippon) is a species ranked as the class Ⅰ nationally key protected wildlife in China and is categorized as Endangered (EN) by IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The wild population of N. nippon is distributed in Yangxian County and its surrounding counties. This work was carried out in the Shaanxi Hanzhong Crested Ibis National Nature Reserve. ENVI 4.0 and ArcGIS 10.22 were used to extract and transform the farmland in the study area into the vector map of the farmland distribution. Twelve transects of 1 000 m×50 m were chosen randomly and the birds were counted using 10×42 binoculars at a speed of 1.8 km·h-1. The farmland was divided into 6 types, including unploughed and impounding land, ploughed and impounding land, ploughed and dry land, unploughed and dry land, dry farming land, and abandoned land. The selection coefficient and selection index of the birds were used to study the forage habitat selection. Twenty-eight sampling plots were randomly selected from 7 transect lines in which the birds were abundant and each sampling plot (1 m×1 m) was employed to investigate the food abundant. The results indicated that N. nippon preferred unploughed and impounding land in winter, and its selection index was 0.49±0.11, significantly higher than that of the other types. N. nippon chose to forage in the paddy field with a water storage depth of 3-6 cm, and the selection index was 0.16±0.21. Insects were the main food resource in the paddy field, accounting for 64.02% of the total quantity. There was no significant difference in the food density between the unploughed and ploughed paddy field with water storage. In conclusion, N. nippon prefers to forage in the unploughed paddy fields with water storage depth of 3-6 cm in winter.
