Bird Diversity in the Fengtongshan Nature Reserve, Sichuan

Abstract:From July 2019 to June 2020, bird diversity was investigated by the method of sample line and sample point in the Fengtongshan Nature Reserve, Wanyuan County, Sichuan Province. Based on field investigation and relevant literature records, a total of 188 species (102 species obtained in the field) belonging to 54 families and 14 orders were recorded. Of all the 188 species, there were 2 class Ⅰ and 26 class Ⅱ national key protected birds, and 4 Sichuan provincial key protected species. Two species were classified as VU in the IUCN red list of threatened species, and 17 species were listed on CITES Appendix Ⅱ. Moreover, 10 species were found to be endemic in China. Statistics of the resident types showed that the proportion of migratory birds was high (59.57%). In terms of floristic characteristics, the proportion of Palearctic species was relatively high, albeit Oriental species were dominant, indicating the transitional feature of the reserve in zoogeographical division. Five habitat types were classified based on the current vegetation status, namely coniferous forest, broad-leaved forest, shrub, wetland, and farmland. The dominant species were obvious in each habitat. The diversity of birds in broad-leaved forest was the highest, followed by farmland, indicating the important role of these two habitats in maintaining bird diversity. Only two species were found in the artificial larch forest due to its high density and poor understory. Jaccard similarity indices showed that the bird community of farmland was highly similar with those of shrub, coniferous forest and broad-leaved forest, and the highest index was detected between farmland and shrub. The similarity between coniferous forest and broad-leaved forest was also high. It is suggested that the investigation and monitoring of rare birds (such as white crowned pheasant and golden pheasant), as well as the patrol and publicity of the important habitats (especially the farmland), should be strengthened. In addition, it can be considered to transform the artificial larch forest, e.g., replanting broad-leaved trees in artificial forest gaps, to improve its biodiversity.
