Diversity and Distribution of Waterbirds in Different Wetland Groups of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau

Abstract:Waterbird populations are declining globally due to the degradation of natural wetlands. Mastering specific information of waterbirds distribution pattern at the regional scale is an important prerequisite for waterbirds conservation. The Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau is one of the 6 major distribution zones for waterbirds in China. However, previous surveys in this area mostly focused on wintering waterbirds in a single wetland. To assess the spatiotemporal distribution of waterbirds in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, we analyzed the waterbirds distribution data of 15 important wetlands using literature data collection methods. The results showed that (1) 128 species of waterbirds were recorded in 15 important wetlands of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, belonging to 16 families and 7 orders, including 11 nationally key protected wildlife of China and 17 threatened species from Red List of China's Vertebrates or IUCN Red List of Threatened Species; (2) the species richness for spring, summer, autumn and winter were 81 (85.3% of total species detected), 48 (50.5%), 85 (89.5%) and 73 (76.8%), respectively; (3) the spatial distribution of species composition may result from the combined effects of wetland area, vegetation type, wetland connectivity, and water depth. We suggest that the management department to improve the monitoring schemes of waterbirds in Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, paying attention to the investigation and protection of migrants in spring and autumn migration seasons, while preferring the representative wetlands of distinct species composition for winter monitoring according to the groups presented in this study.
