Studies on Artificial Incubation of Lophophorus lhuysii in Captivity in Baoxing, Sichuan

Abstract:Experimental research on artificial incubation of the Chinese monal (Lophophorus lhuysii) was carried out at the Research Center of Fengtongzhai National Nature Reserve (Sichuan Province) in 2018 and 2019. Eggs were incubated under different humidity. The eggs of the gradient humidity group were incubated under 3 different humidity, controlling the mass loss of the eggs around 15%; while the eggs of equilibrium humidity group were incubated under the relative humidity of 50%-55%. Eggs were weighed every day, and embryo development was observed by candling the eggs, all the data were recorded. The results showed that 12 chicks hatched with a hatching success of 70.6%. The survival rate of chicks is 100% during 3 months after hatched; the incubation period varied between 28.1 d and 30.2 d, with an average of (29.5±0.6) d; eggs mass loss was between 10.7% and 17.6%, with an average of (14.0±2.0)%. The time of pipping varied between 26.1 d and 28.3 d, with an average of (27.4±0.6) d; the time of hatching was between 36.5 h and 58.5 h, with an average of (48.7±6.8) h. The daily average egg mass was negatively correlated with the incubation days; there was a significant difference on the mass loss rate of eggs and the initial mass of chicks between the gradient humidity group and equilibrium humidity group, but there was no significant difference on piping time and incubation time. The lower the mass loss rate of the eggs, the greater was the initial mass of the hatching; embryonic development characteristics was the same as that of Gallus gallus domesticus. Keeping egg mass loss between 10% and 15% during the incubation process can be used as a reference of humidity setting for L. lhuysii.
