Questionnaire Design for Rapid Assessment of the Status of Endangered Animal Populations Based on Local Ecological Knowledge-Taking the Critically Endangered Chinese Pangolin as an Example

Abstract:Scientific and rational development of an action plan for the conservation of endangered animals requires an assessment of the status of their populations. The questionnaire survey, which is based on the local ecological knowledge of endangered animal populations of the interviewees, is an economic, practical and rapid method for extensively collecting assessment data of population status. Here we developed a questionnaire taking the critically endangered Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) as an example. The questionnaire consisted of basic information, introduction, interviewee's willness, interviewee's animal identification capability, interviewee's information, supplementary questions and population assessment. A total of 17 issues relating to population assessment were designed, including geographical distribution, population size, habitat distribution, threat factors on species and habitat, protection education, and social economic conditions. The questionnaires and the ideas/principles of its design in the current paper can provide reference for the questionnaire design for other endangered animal surveys.
