Rumination Behavior Difference During Rutting Season Between Cervus nippon nippon in Japan and Elaphurus davidianus in Dafeng

Abstract:Lots of researches have been conducted on the rumination behavior of domestic ungulates. However, due to the limitation of field observation, few rumination behavior studies were performed on wild ungulates. Here we observed the sika deer (Cervus nippon nippon) in Nara Park, Japan and Père David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus) in Jiangsu province, China, to explore the effect of sex and age on their ruminating behaviors of rest in rutting seasons. The individuals of the 2 deer species were classified into 5 categories: adult male, adult female, sub-adult male, sub-adult female and fawn. Three specific parameters were set to reflect rumination behavior: bolus processing time, chewing frequency (number of chews of a bolus), and chewing rate (number of chewing per second). The results showed that, 1) the chewing rate of C. nippon nippon and the bolus processing time were significantly influenced by sex and age. Meanwhile, the chewing rate of C. nippon nippon decreased in the following order: fawns > subadult females > subadult males > adult females > adult males, while the bolus processing time decreased as follows: adult males > subadult males > adult females > subadult females > fawns; 2) The chewing frequency of E. davidianus was also significantly influenced by sex and age; 3) There were significant interspecific differences in chewing frequency, bolus processing time and chewing rate between C. nippon nippon and E. davidianus. These results suggest that sex and age, which are accordant to body size of deer, are associated with the inter- and intra-specific differences of rumination behavior in both deer species.
