Sexual Dimorphism of Tylototriton shanjing Yulong Snow Mountain Population

Abstract:From June to August in 2018, sexual dimorphism of Tylototriton shanjing was studied on 32 adults (17,15♀) collected from the Yulong Snow Mountain in Lijiang, Yunnan province. A total of 13 morphological characteristics, such as the total length, head-body length, head length, etc. and the sexual dimorphism of this species was examined. The results showed that the average total length of females was 160.72 mm±3.02 mm (n=15), while the males' was 138.58 mm±2.57 mm (n=17). The average total length ratio of female and male was 1.160, and the heterosexual index was 0.138, indicating that the females were larger than the males. According to the independent sample t test results, T. shanjing had a significant difference in total length between sexes. The results of correlation test showed that all the other morphological characteristics were significantly correlated with total length, except head width, tail width, tail height and space between axilla and groin in females. Using total length as the covariant, the covariance analysis results showed that, the 5 morphological characteristics of T. shanjing such as head-body length, head length, snout length, tail length and the length of foreleg were significantly different between sexes. The results of unary linear regression showed that the growth rates of tail length and the length of foreleg of females were higher than males, while the head-body length, head length and snout length of females were smaller than males. In conclusion, the sexual dimorphism of T. shanjing Yulong Snow Mountain population can be explained by the fertility selection hypothesis.
