Research Progress on the Population Trends of Hirundo rustica

Abstract:Barn swallow (Hirundo rustica), which mostly nests in human buildings, is a worldwide migrant with ecological and cultural significance. Up to now, the breeding population sizes of this species are relatively stable in Europe but keep declining in North America, while the status in Asia still remains unclear. The main factors that influencing the population trends of this species include:climate change, which affects the availability of nest materials and food resources due to the shifting temprature and precipitation, and argricultural intensification, which leads to decreasing food resources and nest sites. However, there is no clear characterization on the underlying mechanism of the long term population change. Further studies on H. rustica should focus on population history and winter ecology. Some recommendations are also provided to the ongoing Chinese swallow monitoring scheme.
