Avian Community Structure and Fauna Characteristics in the Xuebaoding National Nature Reserve, Sichuan

Abstract:Avian population size and community structure are two important factors in monitoring the regional ecosystem. In June, September, and December of 2017, and March and April of 2018, field survey on bird diversity was conducted in the Xuebaoding National Nature Reserve, Sichuan province. A total of 208 bird species belonging to 54 families, 17 orders were recorded in the field. Combined with the literatures, there were 255 bird species belonging to 58 families, 17 orders in the reserve, including 42 endangered species. Based on the result of habitat analysis, the bird diversity in the broad-leaved forest was the biggest, while the evenness in the mixed broadleaf-conifer forest was the biggest. The avian community structure in the broad-leaved forest showed the maximum similarity with the mixed broadleaf-conifer forest. However, the bird diversity and evenness in spring were the biggest. Moreover, the community structure was similar between spring and summer. Field survey also found a lot of human disturbances in the reserve, such as pasture and traditional Chinese herbs collecting. It is suggested that the long-term monitoring, environmental education, co-management of the reserve and the community, and the eco-compensation should be established to protect the biodiversity of the reserve.
