Population Status of Nomascus concolor in Bangma Mountain, Lincang, Yunnan

Abstract:The western black crested gibbon (Nomascus concolor) is mainly distributed in Yunnan, China. Of the four subspecies, N. concolor furvogaster is endemic to the Lincang prefecture, southwest Yunnan, however, lack of systematic surveys were conducted for the population and distribution of this species. Bangma Mountain is one of the distribution areas of N. c. furvogaster. In order to assess the status of N. concolor population in Bangma Mountain, interviews and field surveys were conducted by monitoring the loud morning songs and using the line-transect methods from October 2013 to January 2014 and in May 2014. The results showed that N. concolor were rare, probably only two groups survived in the discontinuous forest patches in Bangma Mountain because of the early natural disasters, deforestation, and heavy hunting. As one of the core areas in Lancangjiang Provincial Nature Reserve, the most important measure for wildlife protection in Bangma Mountain is to build an administrative agency and start regular monitoring to prevent any illegal activities in the reserve.
