The Variation and Correlation of Immune and Stress Levels of Captive Elaphurus davidianus in Different Seasons

Abstract:Elaphurus davidianus is the first class protected animal in China, and listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List as a field of extinctions. Noninvasive sampling and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were used in this study to determine the indices of physiological stress and immunophysiology. The results showed that: the levels of IgA, IgG and IgM in both male and female individuals in autumn and summer were higher than in winter. The humoral immunity responses of female E. davidianus are more effectively than males as the levels of IgG of the female individual are higher than male in each season. However, the alloimmunization of the male individual was more sensitive for the levels of IgM of the males were higher than the females’ in each season. A positive correlation was observed between the levels of cortisol and IgG, in the fecal of male and female E. davidianus. In conclusion, IgG level is an ideal parameter for reflecting immune physiological state of the E. davidianus, and this finding provides a scientific basis for the survey and health status evaluation of reintroduction of the E. davidianus population.
