Anuran Larvae of China at the Family Level Based on Morphological Data

Abstract:Until the end of 2017, a total of 466 species of amphibians, belonging to 14 families in three orders were recorded from China, of which 386 anuran species are classified in 10 families. The tadpole is the larval stage in the life cycle of the anurans, particularly characterized by a high level of morphological specialization, coupled with an ecological transformation from aquatic to terrestrial. The larval characters are important indicators of evolutionary relationship among the anurans. Much morphological description of the tadpoles is focused on species level, but few data on family level are commonly recognized in China. In this study, the tadpoles of nine families (Bombinatoridae, Megophryidae, Bufonidae, Hylidae, Ranidae, Dicroglossidae, Occidozygidae, Rhacophoridae, Microhylidae) except Ceratobatrachidae, is illustrated major adaptive groups based largely on eight morphological characters. Some of the larval characters are briefly summarized throughout large taxonomic groups, may be in gross appearance and in habits, respectively.
